A deep rumble, like the steady snores of a sleeping giant, envelops the factory. The temperature is nearly 75 degree celsius near the furnace, the surface temperature being around 300 degree celsius.

Heedless of the heat, tiffany keys, men armed with steel rods, the tips glowing, walk to and fro thrusting the ends into the furnace, wrapping gleaming molten glass around the rods.

Near the entrance at the Express Glass Works in Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, the end product lies waiting: glass bangles, buy tiffany bracelets, their hue that of the deepest red.

The colour is a speciality of this factory, says Mohammed Islam Khan, the owner; a secret family recipe handed down over generations.

At 70,tiffany key rings on sale, the commerce post-graduate from Aligarh Muslim University is a pioneer of sorts in this city that, according to The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) figures, supplies around 50 million bangles to the country every day.

For years, since his grandfather set up the factory in 1914, open pot coal or wood furnaces were used to manufacture bangles.

In December 1996, the Supreme Court ordered 292 coal-based factories around the Taj Trapezium Zone, including Firozabad pot-furnace units, to either switch to cleaner, alternative fuels, relocate or shut down.

For Khan, the court ruling was akin to a death knell. His was a small-scale industry that wouldn’t have survived relocation and there was no technical know-how available on alternative fuel. Shutting down wasn’t an option either, he says. Khan opted for natural gas, but the costs hit the roof.

It was around this time, that TERI, with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), was developing clean, energy-efficient technologies based on natural gas for pot furnaces.

Their model cut energy consumption by nearly 30 per cent compared to the other retro-fitted gas-fired pot furnaces. The challenge, however, thanksgiving money clips, was getting the factory owners involved.

The owners would come for the meetings, but weren’t interested, says TERI spokesperson Rajiv Chibber. The reason, says Khan, was the cost.

The old coal furnace cost owners between Rs 1-2 lakh but the TERI furnace came for Rs 30-40 lakh. If the technology flopped, my factory would shut down. But the reward was greater if it worked, says Khan.

Persuasion finally worked. Khan was the first one to take the plunge. TERI and SDC agreed to bear hardware and construction costs as well as production expenses during the trial run while Khan agreed to bear production costs once the furnace was stabilised and to buy it back, at a concession, after a successful demonstration.

Now, standing near the TERI furnace, Khan barks out instructions to his workers. It’s close to 11 a.m. and there’s a cool breeze outside.

But inside, next to the furnace, it feels like a hot afternoon in the Sahara desert. Khan wipes the sweat off his face, as he monitors his workers even as he reminicises the trials of a new technology at work. It took nearly two years for the problems to be ironed out.

But the one challenge that gave him many sleepless nights was the colour of the bangles. His factory is known for the deepest red colour called Lal Anju a recipe that was given by a stranger to his grandfather Bhooray Khan.

The new furnace was giving problems on this front. Once problems of clarity had been worked out, Khan realised there was inconsistency in the colour. Red is the most sensitive hue in glassmaking, thanksgiving key rings, he says. In a report released this year,

TERI’s Girish Sethi, who headed the project, notes, The entire Firozabad glass industry was looking eagerly at us. The technology that we were demonstrating had not been tried out anywhere else in the world. But Khan didn’t give up. After experimenting on various chemical combinations, he finally managed to get the colour right.

And while Khan may have looked towards the future of a cleaner fuel and lower costs, the others were still apprehensive. It was in 2004 that Lalitesh Kumar Agarwal, owner of Bapu Glass Industries, spoke to Khan about shrinking profits.

Khan gave a demonstration of the TERI furnace to Agarwal, who reluctantly got one installed. It was a noticeable change. Earlier, if you walked into the factory in a white shirt, you’d come out all blackened. Now, the air is cleaner, my workers are healthier, says Agarwal who went on to install three more TERI furnaces.

Since 2000, 40 out of the around 80 glass bangle factories in Firozabad have adopted the TERI furnace and there are more in installation stages. Some units have even drawn upon the model to develop their own energy efficient, heat recovery devices.

The Firozabad glass bangle factory initiative has become a flagship project, says Chhibber, for the ongoing TERI project Competence Network for Small and Micro Learning Enterprises (COSMILE).

And while the Firozabad experience has become an important case study for TERI, Khan is busy reaping its rewards. Do you know one bangle passes through 45 hands, he says.

Make it 45 hands plus one innovative piece of technology that brought life back into the glass bangle industry.

SYDNEY, July 29 AAP – To many, The Bangles were one of the original girl groups, but the reformed 80s band doesn’t want to be lumped into the same category as the Spice Girls or the Pussycat Dolls.

The band, who are famous for chart-topping songs like Eternal Flame and Walk Like An Egyptian, tiffany, are back together, writing new music and touring the world, including Australia this October.

The three original members – Susanna Hoffs and sisters Debbi and Vicki Peterson (minus fourth Bangle Michael Steele) – are winning over a new generation of fans with their infectious pop sound.

The music industry has changed a lot since The Bangles were at the height of their fame, but unfortunately the lack of all-women bands hasn’t, according to Peterson.

"I think it is harder for women to break through, cheap tiffany earrings, because it is still pretty male-dominated," she told AAP from Los Angeles.

Peterson doesn’t count in that group manufactured girl groups who don’t play instruments or write their own songs, such as the Spice Girls, the Pussycat Dolls or Girls Aloud.

Nor does she consider them as following in The Bangles’ footsteps.

"They always called them girl bands but they’re not bands, they have singing and dancing fools," Peterson said.

"I don’t really listen to a lot of that stuff because it seems so manufactured to me.

"I prefer to hear other girl bands who are actually musicians, and there have been a few who have come and gone.

"I kind of would like to hear more of them."

When The Bangles broke up in 1989, Peterson said they all needed some time on their own after such intense years together.

For years they resisted offers to make quick money with a reunion tour.

Peterson said when they eventually re-formed in 1999 to record the song Get the Girl for the Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me soundtrack, it was for the right reasons.

"We did it slowly, we did it because we wanted to, we didn’t have somebody behind the desk with a big cigar saying ‘girls, I’m going to make you a million dollars if you do this tour with this band’,discount tiffany earrings," she said.

"We want to play together again, we want to make new music again, and just tour again.

"We thought, OK let’s try it again, discount tiffany cuff Links, let’s just don’t do it the way we did it."

Peterson said the group is having more fun than ever this time around.

"We’ve just been doing it and having fun, tiffany jewellery, and there are great audiences basically everywhere we’ve played," she said.

"We’re seeing a lot more younger fans these days."

Some of their youngest fans are their children, particularly Peterson’s 11-year-old son.

"My son is like, ‘mum, you’re my favourite band’," she said.

"He’s really cute with his friends – he’s like, ‘My mum, yep, she’s in The Bangles’. It’s cool."

IN A SPACE DOWNTOWN On Cortlandt Street that last housed a messenger service, Khan Kashani just opened a women’s clothing boutique specializing in expensive designer labels.

Mr. Kashani is betting that affluent residents moving downtown will want to shop for the pricey yet casual clothes that he is selling – without leaving the neighborhood.

"There are a lot of condos going up, bringing in people who want luxury," he says.

Lured by Wall Street’s high-earning professionals and a growing number of affluent residents, upscale retailers, from BMW to Thomas Pink and Hickey Freeman, have opened locations downtown.

Basics, too

THOUGH THE STORES are welcome additions, there is a downside to their arrival:Their presence is driving up rents and driving out long-time independent merchants – a transformation that isn’t seen as a good thing by residents, who also desire supermarkets and dry cleaners.

Thanks to a wave of condominium conversions, about 46,000 people now live downtown – almost 20,000 more than in 2002 and up from 31,000 in 2003.

The newcomers who are being enticed by those units are exactly the type of wealthy consumers targeted by prestigious retailers.

Median household income in the neighborhood surged to $162,700 last year, compared with $111,000 in 2004, according to the Alliance for Downtown New York.

Ground-floor rents are rising dramatically as the area attracts more retail. Sites on Broadway, Wall Street and Broad Street are leasing for $200 a square foot, up from about $85 in 2002.

Exclusive merchants that have migrated to the area, which include leather goods designer Hermes and men’s clothier Canali, are more than willing to pay the freight required to be in the heart of the world’s financial capital.

Many of them have set up shop in grand old bank buildings. Tiffany, which moved into the former Trust Co. of America building at 37 Wall this fall, said the recent influx of residents was the draw.

"That area has always been a very important business hub, but now with all these conversions, thanksgiving key rings, you’ve got this real community," says Beth Canavan, an executive vice president at Tiffany.

Though status retailers are a sign of the area’s vitality, residents also need basic goods and services, some of which used to be supplied by independents that can no longer afford the rents.

"The mom-and-pop stores – the little jeweler, tiffany bracelets sale, the little discount variety store, the non-national food retailers, the delis, the nondescript stores – [they] are being replaced," says Faith Hope Consolo, head of the retail division at Prudential Douglas Elliman.

More to come

OVERALL,shop for tiffany key rings, there are about 1,200 shops and restaurants downtown, including fixtures like department store Century 21, on Cortlandt Street, tiffany bangles for sale, and electronics emporium J&R Music and Computer World, on Park Row.

More retail is on the way.

The Fulton Street Transit Center, which is slated to be completed late this year or early in 2009,tiffany earrings clearance, will offer 20,000 square feet.

The eventual build-out of the World Trade Center complex will provide another 490,000 square feet of space for retail activity – about 60,000 more than the original WTC.

And unlike that shopping space, which was largely underground to capture consumers commuting by subway, much of the space that will come on-line over the next few years will be at ground level or above.

If your jewelry box is overflowing, some of the pieces you no longer wear could find a new home Thursday during Baubles, Bangles and Beads, tiffany keys, a jewelry swap/fundraiser for the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Guild.

The event, tiffany rings sale, the first of its kind for the guild, serves a triple purpose. Primarily, it will raise money for educational programs for the Youth Orchestras, but young women at Girls Inc. also will benefit. And those attending get the chance to bring home new-to-you pieces to add to their personal collections.

Admission is $25 plus at least one quality piece of costume jewelry from home (bring more if you like). Organizers stress the importance of quality costume jewelry. No junk please, said publicity co-chairwoman Suzanne Ahn.

The first item you bring will be donated to Girls Inc.

"They can use the jewelry as Christmas gifts for their mentors who have become very special in their lives, buy tiffany bracelets," Ahn said.

For every other item you bring, you can take home half that amount from other donated jewelry. For instance, if you bring four items, you can take home two.

"It’s an opportunity for other people to pick up gifts for other people or to add to their own collections," Ahn added. "This was an idea for something fun and different to do."

Reservations are advised so organizers can get a head count of how many to expect, as wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served on the mezzanine level at Greenlife Grocery.

"And you can do your grocery shopping on the way out, tiffany Pendant," Ahn said.

Though she no longer makes public appearances, at age 92, actress and singer Lena Horne is looking back on an incomparable career that spanned seven decades.

Horne is indeed the matriarch of African American entertainers and a trailblazer for all those who would come after her.

"Elegant and wise, she personifies both the elegance of Hollywood and the reality of a lifetime spent battling racial and social injustices," PBS said of Horne a few years ago in its "American Masters" series.

Lena Horne’s rise to fame in the entertainment world began as a 16-year-old in the 1930s.

She went on to perform on stage and screen, and in concert and studio, until her retirement nine years ago at age 83.

But much of Horne’s note-worthiness came as a result of her public stance against racial discrimination during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.

She was one of only a handful of high profile African American entertainers willing to risk their careers to support civil rights and human dignity.

Horne was among a group of luminaries that included Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis, James Baldwin, Lorraine Hansbeny, Harry Belafonte and white actor Rip Torn who faced being black-listed for their support of equal rights for African Americans.

In 1941, Horne sang at Café Society and worked with Paul Robeson, the renowned black singer/actor whose outspokenness about racial injustices led to him being blacklisted and denied a passport.

During World War II, when entertaining troops for the USO, Horne refused to perform "for segregated audiences or to groups in which German POWs were seated in front of African American servicemen."

She also worked with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to pass anti-lynching legislation.

Despite her long association with the organization that helped launch her career, the NAACP member she most admired was Medgar Evers, who motivated her to step up her activism during her 1963 trip through the South

According to her autobiography, "Stormy Weather," Horne was moved by Evers’ optimism and personal power, children who learned to protect themselves from racial violence during protests and the knowledge that Evers’ home had been firebombed days earlier.

In fact, she sang at a church concert and attended an NAACP rally in Jackson with Medgar Evers the weekend before Evers was gunned down in his driveway on June 12, 1963.

Horns was at the March on Washington where she spoke and performed on behalf of the NAACP, SNCC and the National Council of Negro Women.

She stood behind Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while he gave his famous "I Have A Dream" speech and attended his funeral five years later in Atlanta.

Horne’s interest in the plight of blacks in America was perhaps aroused at an early age.

Her grandfather, her mother Edna’s father, inventor Samuel R. Scottron, was a community leader in New York who set up organizations to promote racial harmony and fairness.

Scottron was also a public speaker and writer on race relations, a member of the Brooklyn board of education and a leader in the Republican Party who fought to end slavery in Cuba and Puerto Rico.

Horne’s uncle, Frank S. Horne, was an adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and dean of students at Fort Valley State University in Georgia.

Lena Mary Calhoun Horne was born June 30, 1917 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Both sides of her family are of African American, Native American and Caucasian descent and both were part of what W.E.B. DuBois called "The Talented Tenth," the upper stratum of middle-class,tiffany Pendant, well-educated African Americans.

She is reportedly a descendant of the John C. Calhoun family.

Horne grew up in an upper middle-class black community. Her father, Edwin "Teddy" Horne, who worked as a bookie in the gambling trade, tiffany rings sale, left the family when she was three and she was raised primarily by her grandparents, Cora Calhoun and Edwin Horne.

Her grandmother had her join the NAACP in October 1919, at which time she was profiled in the NAACP Bulletin as the organization’s youngest member at two years old.

Horne attended Booker Washington Junior High School in Atlanta before moving on to Girls High School, an all-girls public high school in Brooklyn which has since become Boys & Girls High School on Fulton Street.

But Horne left school at age 16 to help support her ailing mother and became a dancer at Harlem’s famed Cotton Club.

In two years at the Cotton Club, she appeared with such entertainers as Cab Calloway, the Nicholas Brothers and Avon Long before starring in her own shows.

She also performed with other jazz notables, including Artie Shaw, Teddy Wilson, Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington, Bobby Short, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Barnet, Benny Carter and Billy Eckstine.

In 1935, Horne joined the Noble Sissle orchestra under the name Helena Horne.

While singing for Charlie Barnet’s orchestra, she was discovered by producer John Hammond, and soon after performed in a solo show at Carnegie Hall.

She is also associated with acts by Rosemary Clooney, Doris Day and Barbra Streisand.

In 1942, Horne moved to Los Angeles, after which she appeared in such movies as "Cabin in the Sky (1943)," "Duchess of Idaho (1950)" and "Meet Me in Las Vegas (1956)."

Her role in the film "Stormy Weather (1943)" included her rendition of the title song, which became her trademark.

By the mid-1950s,tiffany key rings for sale, Horne had become disenchanted with Hollywood for casting her in stereotypical roles and focused on her nightclub career.

It was at that time that McCarthy’s anti-Communism propaganda led to her being blacklisted for her political views and friendship with Robeson.

She was eventually removed from the blacklist with the urging of some of Hollywood’s heavyweights.

"In her rise beyond Hollywood’s racial stereotypes of maids, butlers and African natives, she achieved true stardom on the silver screen, and became a catalyst for change even beyond the glittery fringes of studio life," PBS said.

Horne returned to the big screen three more times, playing chanteuse Claire Quintana in the 1969 film "Death of a Gunfighter," Glinda in "The Wiz (1978)" and co-hosting the 1994 MGM retrospective "That’s Entertainment! III," in which she was candid about the studio’s treatment.

After leaving Hollywood, Horne established herself as one of the premiere nightclub performers of the post-war era.

She headlined at clubs and hotels throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe, including the Sands in Las Vegas, the Cocoanut Grove in Los Angeles and the Waldorf-Astoria in New York.

In 1957, her live album entitled, "Lena Horne at the Waldorf-Astoria," became the largest selling record by a female artist in the history of the RCA-Victor label.

In 1958, Horne was nominated for a Tony Award for "Best Actress in a Musical," for her part in the Calypso musical "Jamaica." The performance earned her a New York Drama Critic’s Poll Award.

From the late 1950s through the 1960s, Horne was a staple on TV variety shows, appearing multiple times on Perry Como’s Kraft Music Hall, the Ed Sullivan Show, the Dean Martin Show and the Bell Telephone Hour.

She also appeared on the Judy Garland Show, the Hollywood Palace and the Andy Williams Show.

Besides two television specials for the BBC that were later syndicated in the U.S., she starred in her own television special in 1969, "Monsanto Night Presents Lena Horne."

In 1970, Horne co-starred with Harry Belafonte in the hour-long "Harry & Lena" for ABC; and in 1973, she co-starred with Tony Bennelt in "Tony & Lena." Horne and Bennett later toured the U.S. and U.K. in a show together.

Horne also made a memorable appearance in the 1976 progtam "Amcuca Salutes Richard Rodgers," where she sang a lengthy medley of Rodgers songs wilh Peggy Lee and Vic Damone.

She made several appearauces on "The Flip Wilson Show," in addition to playing herself on "The Muppet Show," "Sesame Street" and "Sanford and Son" in the 1970s.

She also had a 1985 performance on "The Cosby Show" and made a 1993 appearance on "A Different World."

In the summer of 1980, Horne, then-63 and intent on retiring from show business, embarked upon a two month series of benefit concerts spon-sored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

These concerts were represented as Horne’s farewell tour, but her retirement lasted less than a year.

In May 1981, Horne was booked for a four-week engagement at the Nederlander Theatre in New York City.

The show was an instant success and was extended to a full year run, garnering Horne a special Tony Award and a Drama Critic’s Circle Award.

She also won two Grammy Awards for the cast recording of her show, "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music."

The 333 performance Broadway run closed on Horne’s 65th birthday, June 30, 1982.

However, tiffany keys, a few days later on July 4, the show began a tour of 41 cities in the U.S. and Canada and ended with performances in London and Stockholm in August and September 1984.

For "The Lady and Her Music," Lena Horne still holds the record for longest-running solo performance in Broadway history.

She received a Kennedy Center honor for lifetime contribution to the arts in 1984.

A proposed 1983 joint recording project between Horne and Frank Sinatra, to be produced by Quincy Jones, was ultimately abandoned.

Thus, her sole recording of the decade was 1988′s "The Men in My Life,"’ featuring duets with Sammy Davis Jr. and Joe Williams.

In 1989, she received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Following her 1993 performance at a tribute to the musical legacy of her good friend Billy Strayhorn, shop for tiffany bangles, Duke Ellington’s longtime pianist and arranger, Horne decided to record an album composed largely of Strayhorn and Ellington songs.

To coincide with the release of the album, "We’ll Be Together Again," Horne made what would be her final concert performances at New York’s Supper Club and Carnegie Hall.

Also in 1993, she lent her vocals to a recording of "Embraceable You" on Sinatra’s "Duets II" album.

In 1995, a live album capturing her Supper Club performances was released and subsequently won a Grammy Award for "Best Jazz Vocal Album."

In 1998 at age 81, Horne released another studio album entitled, "Being Myself."

Thereafter, Horne essentially retired from performing and largely retreated from public view, though she did return to the recording studio in 2000 to contribute vocal trades on Simon Rattle’s "Classic Ellington" album.

ABC’s proposed project for a biopic of Horne starring Janet Jackson was nixed after Jackson’s infamous "wardrobe malfunction" debacle during the 2004 Super Bowl led Horne and, her daughter Gail Lumet Buckley to ask that Jackson not take the part.-

Horne’s final album, "Seasons of a Life," including such signature songs as ‘Something to Live For," "Chelsea Bridge" and "Stormy Weather," was released on Jan. 24, 2006.

Horne was portrayed by Leslie Uggams as the older Lena and Nikki Crawford as the younger Lena in the musical "Stormy Weather" staged at the Pasadena (Calif.) Playhouse earlier this year.

Horne married Louis Jordan Jones in 1937. They had two children, a daughter, Gail, and a son, Edwin. The couple divorced in 1944.

Horne was married to her second husband, Jewish American Lennie Hayton, a premiere musical conductor and arranger at MGM, from 1947 until his death in 1971.

Horne’s son, known as Teddy, died of kidney failure at age 29 within months of Hayton’s death. Her father also died within the same year.

Though Horne recounted the struggle she and her husband faced as an interracial couple in her autobiographical memoir "Lena," she admitted to Ebony magazine in 1980 that she really married Hayton to further her career and cross the color line in show business.

Raise a pint and make a toast. The First Annual Great North Carolina Beer Festival is Saturday at Tanglewood Park.

"The time is right for us to have a beer festival here," said Scott Smith, the sales director for Foothills Brewing, one of more than 40 breweries that are participating in the festival. There is a mix of local, regional and national companies. "We’re seeing in the local market beers are beginning to change."

Much of that change, he said, has come from changes in North Carolina laws that have been "extremely friendly to microbreweries."

"We are able to self-distribute as opposed to going through wholesalers," Smith said. "And there was a law change five years ago (Aug. 13,tiffany earrings sale, 2005). We went from a 6-percent alcohol cap to 15 percent, which enabled an enormous amount of brands and styles to come into the state and be available to the consumer."

The N.C. Brewers Guild has 42 microbreweries currently with operating permits and several more under construction, he said.

"At least 20 of those will be participating, cheap tiffany jewellery," said Jessica Reavis, the marketing director for the beer festival. "Our vision was to have a location in North Carolina to bring all the North Carolina brewers together and have one of the biggest beer festivals in the southeast…. We want people from all over to attend."

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank, Forsyth Humane Society and the Special Olympics, said C.H. McMahan, the president of the festival.

The festival will provide music all day, including legendary rock-group Kansas as well as Big Daddy Love, the Part-Time Party-Time Band, The Plaids and Katelyn Marks Band. There will also be more than 30 arts-and-crafts vendors and concessions by various restaurants including Bib’s Downtown and WS Prime.

Patrons will get a wristband and a sampler glass, cheap tiffany key rings, Reavis said. The booths will distribute small samples of various beers, but "every single one of these guys is very conscious of who’s been overserved, and when to cut those people off," Reavis said. "Being in the beer industry, they’ve seen it every day of their lives, tiffany necklaces clearance, probably. Some of them do 60 festivals a year." Designated driver tickets are $5 off.

Foothills does about 40 festivals a year, in nine different states, Smith said.

"This is the first year we’re having a home-town beer festival," he said, "and we’re very excited to do anything we can to grow the craft beer culture in our area."

The beer festival is using the example of the North Carolina Wine Festival that is held each year at Tanglewood Park. It will be at the same location as that festival. "Wine’s big,buy tiffany necklaces, but beer has much more broad appeal," Reavis said.

"The Tanglewood wine festival has left a great footprint for a successful event out there," Smith said. "There’s enough area for you to spread out and enjoy yourself. There’s not just beer, there’s games, music, arts-and-crafts vendors … it has the formula to be a really successful event."

Mraz’s grandfathers were farmers, and almost every night he ate the tomatoes and okra that they grew. He grew up around farms in Mechanicsville, Va., and today he harvests avocados on his own Southern California farm.

And now, continuing what might be considered a natural progression, tiffany ring, Mraz is one of the hipper headliners of this year’s Farm Aid, coming to Verizon Wireless Amphitheater on Sunday.

The benefit concert features Farm Aid founders Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp, along with Farm Aid board member Dave Matthews, Wilco, Gretchen Wilson and others.

"When I was younger, I remember that was one of the first festivals I was ever aware of," says Mraz, who is not committed to farming commercially but does it to serve his community.

Mraz was invited to perform at Farm Aid by Nelson.

"I’m really touched I’m a part of this, especially during a time when the food industry needs more of these events happening, buying locally and buying organically," Mraz says.

And that’s what Farm Aid, the longest-running benefit concert series, is all about. Farm Aid has raised nearly $35 million since the first concert in Champaign, Ill., in 1985. This is the first time St. Louis or Missouri has hosted Farm Aid.

"We continue to be excited about coming to St. Louis," Farm Aid executive director Carolyn Mugar says. "We know it’s right for us."

Farm Aid’s mission is to promote a "vibrant family farm system of agriculture in America." It does so by creating a demand for food from family farms, connecting consumers with farmers, tiffany cuff Links clearance, and telling people about the benefits of family farming and the downsides of industrial farming.

Mugar says she had a good feeling about bringing Farm Aid to St. Louis when organizers and local dignitaries announced the concert this summer at the Soulard Market, and that feeling has continued with all the work between Farm Aid, Verizon, promoter Live Nation, the artists and area farmers.

Organizers have been working hard to ensure the show is the "right mix" for St. Louis, tiffany Pendant, with classic rock, country and "four main artists who are huge," Mugar says.

Not huge yet, but equally interesting are the breakthrough artists Farm Aid presents.

"We like bringing in people on the cusp," Mugar says. "That’s fun, when you can look back and the first time you saw someone was at a Farm Aid and now they’re Mr. Big."

She thinks Phosphorescent, Matthew Houck’s folksy outfit, may be one of those acts.

"We’re stoked, of course," Houck says. "This is a great thing (Nelson) started, and we’re proud to help out in any way."

Phosphorescent recently released "To Willie," a tribute to Nelson featuring songs such as "I Gotta Get Drunk," "Reasons to Quit" and "Too Sick to Pray."

After he heard the CD,tiffany money clips for sale, Nelson called the band to give his stamp of approval, hang out with Houck and ask Phosphorescent to join him on Farm Aid.

"I’m looking forward to sharing the stage with all these musical icons," Houck says. "And if we end up playing with Willie, there’s any number of good songs I could play with him."

There’s a good chance that could happen, along with any number of on-stage collaborations. "There’s going to be surprises," Mugar promises.

And though music takes center stage at Farm Aid, the bigger task is never forgotten: promoting family farming.

At Homegrown Village, concertgoers will find interactive activities and opportunities to speak with farmers. Organic corn dogs and other Earth-friendly concessions will be available.

"Be hungry and have your spirits high," Mugar says, calling Farm Aid "the biggest family farm restaurant in St. Louis, but only for one day."

Matthews, who’ll perform with Tim Reynolds, tiffany, says the festival will try to open people’s eyes regarding the importance of family farming.

"As the awareness of quality food grows, the quality of food is becoming much more important," he says. "There’s more light at the end of the tunnel now than there was two decades ago."

Interview ; Malcolm Wall ; Harlequins chairman ; Club’s new chief sees governance reform as crucial, writes Ben Fenton

Few rugby clubs have a chairman who cites the virtues of the SarbanesOxley Act.

But just as the Enron and WorldCom scandals led to reform of US corporate governance, so " Bloodgate" at Harlequins this summer prompted soul-searching within a sport where infringements are traditionally punished by a penalty kick or, in the privacy of ruck and maul, just a kick.

Malcolm Wall, tiffany cuff Links clearance, the new chairman of "Quins",tiffany Pendant, believes the soul of rugby can now be saved only by a fundamental reform of its corporate, as well as on-field, governance.

This summer, the club wanted an internal inquiry into Bloodgate and engaged Mr Wall, who was once a player in the club’s amateur days and was recently chief executive of cable company Virgin Media’s content division.

Bloodgate began on April 12 when Dean Richards, tiffany key ring, Quins’ then director of rugby, told his physiotherapist to order a player to crack a blood capsule in his mouth in the closing minutes of a game. By feigning a blood injury, rugby’s substitution laws allowed a specialist kicker substituted earlier in the match to return to the field in the hope of scoring a drop goal.

As a cover-up, the Quins’ doctor cut the player’s lip, but the opposition made a formal complaint. In spite of Mr Richards and other Quins’ staff lying over the incident, the truth eventually came out .

Charles Jillings, chairman, resigned, while Mr Richards was banned for three years by the sport’s authorities. The physiotherapist was banned for two years and the player for four months. The doctor faces legal action.

Quins suffered huge damage to their reputation, a fine and costs totalling more than pound(s)500,000 – wiping out what would have been the first profit of its 13-year professional history – and a noticeably poorer performance on the pitch this season.

"The players would not have been human if it didn’t get through to them," Mr Wall said in his first interview since accepting Mr Jillings’ invitation to become chairman, a post he also held in 1997-2000.

Mr Wall has acted on his own recommendations to the board, installing new lines of reporting and a whistleblowing mechanism. "We had a situation where the playing management were doing things that weren’t being signed off [by the board].

"It’s good business practice for a board to know what’s happening in its operations, particularly if [it is] essentially against the laws of the game."

He drew an explicit comparison with the US laws passed in 2002 in response to Enron and other scandals.

"Working within a Sarbanes-Oxley environment, most people groan because of the huge amount of administration involved. But the principles were right: the concept that you must put in systems that assume that some human beings will want to abuse the system," he said.

"If rugby is to be successful – commercially, discount tiffany bracelets, but also in terms of elite rugby being an example – we have to make sure that those levels of governance are in place."

Staff now understand there is "zero tolerance" of "what we euphemistically call gamesmanship but what is actually just cheating", he added.

Harlequins’ veterans’ team, until recently captained by Mr Wall, are called "the Gentlemen". But is there any room for the spirit of sportsmanship in the modern professional game?

"If you lose that, you potentially lose supporters," Mr Wall responded. "Many are attracted by [those] attributes of rugby. We have to keep it as a highly competitive sport played by wonderful athletes, that is genuinely entertaining . . . and that maintains standards of behaviour we can all relate to and admire.

"I don’t think that is a foolish dream," he said. "But these things, just by putting them in the ether, thanksgiving key rings, they don’t stay. What you have to do is manage them with good governance."

Ben Edelstein will be remembered as generous, gracious and kind by family, friends, thanksgiving day 2010, customers and students.

Edelstein passed away at the age of 83 on Saturday. Born to Morris and Yetta Edelstein, he helped to build his family’s furniture business, Edelstein’s Better Furniture, and was the father to sons, Steve, Morris and daughter, Sheryl.

Born in Brownsville, Edelstein attended the Texas A&M University and then left school to serve in the Navy during World War II. He then completed college at the University of Texas at Austin and then moved to Harlingen.

Edelstein and his family built their furniture business from the ground up. His father, Morris, necklaces, immigrated to the United States from Lithuania and founded Edelstein’s Better Furniture in 1906.

Edelstein will be remembered by dozens of grateful students for his creation of two scholarship endowments at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College, named for his parents Yetta and Morris.

"The rising costs to maintain the university has filtered through to the students in the form of fees and higher tuition, so every donated dollar is greatly needed," reads a 1987 letter from one grateful accounting student at Texas Southmost College and what was then Pan American University in Brownsville, according to a UTB-TSC press release. "I will always treasure my education, tiffany bracelet, and I hope other students to follow will be given the same opportunity and privilege to receive your scholarship."

Edelstein had said the scholarships were a tribute to his parents, and that he wanted all students to have the opportunity to pursue education.

"I just wanted to create the scholarships for my mother and dad. I wanted them to be remembered," Edelstein said,Thanksgiving surprise gift, who started a nursing school scholarship for his mother and a business school scholarship in honor of his father. "I always thought of a scholarship fund as something special."

Barry Horn, thanksgiving necklaces, a former UTB-TSC employee, helped Edelstein to transition the scholarship to UTB-TSC after the school separated from University of Texas-Pan American. Horn also delivered letters of appreciation written by students who had received the scholarships.

"He was always very encouraged by the students acknowledgement of the gift and he felt that the young people in South Texas understood the difference that a gift like this made because it was expressed in the letters," Horn said.

Horn remembered Edelstein as a gracious man, who continued to increase his generosity over the years by putting more and more money into the scholarship endowments.

"One of Brownsville’s true gentlemen has left us," Horn said.
